Obama Must Exact a Real Price from Fiji's Junta in 2010
The United States Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor issued one of those standard operating procedure report's a few months back stating that the Obama Administration's "top priority" concerning Fiji was to "encourage the country's return to democratic rule via free and fair elections, to strengthen human rights protections, and to promote a free and robust media."
The year 2009 draws to a close and the Obama administration have done little to "encourage" Frank Bainimarama to achieve any of those 3 "top priority" goals. If there was ever an evaluation done to measure the Obama administrations effectiveness in achieving their rhetoric in Fiji for 2009, it would score the lowest of all the Asia Pacific rim Democracies.
Credit is given for the token funding offered, the GPOI sanctions and the trafficking sanctions loaded with proviso's.
The foundation however of the United States official Foreign Policy on Fiji in 2009 which has been echoed verbatim by the Commonwealth and Pacific Islands Forum will clearly not be complied with by Admiral Frank Bainimarama, that is, it will not be inclusive, it will not be time bound, and there will be a pre-determined outcome.
In light of all the evidence of our Fiji's path towards absolute destruction ranging from all the dust gathering 2009 Amnesty reports to our Global Media Freedom ranking at the 152nd spot being worse than Afghanistan, to the expulsion of foreign nationals, the United States have failed to take any proactive steps towards "encouraging" the military junta to return Fiji to democratic rule, when in fact the United States have the unilateral power to excersise its "encouragement" beginning with Susan Rice's "veto wielding power" within the UN DPKO.
Is there a glimmer of hope that in 2010 there would not only be a reaffirmation of one united foreign policy expressing the usual "grave concern" but for the Obama administration to cleanse its American Samoan Chairs lens to stand firmly behind the EU, Commonwealth, and Pacific Islands Forum and "exact a real price" from Frank Bainiamrama's Rouge Military Government?
