Fiji's Terminator Seed Technology and No Idea Frank
Terminator technology, or varietal genetic use restriction technologies, known as V-GURTs for short, produces seeds that grow into plants that have sterile seeds, often referred to as "suicide seeds".
The plant itself appears normal, as do the seeds that it produces, but if planted they would never germinate.
V-GURTs have a unique property. They are not just any type of genetic modification; they have ramifications that could affect the entire planet.
Why would anybody want to introduce terminator technology? There are two possibilities:
They may want to prevent the contamination of non-GM crops by GM crops, thus resolving a fundamental concern about GMOs.
Or, as most people suggest, the technology is designed to ensure greater profits for seed manufacturers by requiring new seeds to be purchased annually.
Make no mistake, this is the confidential 'commercially sensitive' game plan of our major food distributors in Fiji.
The scary part is that they have Frank in their back pockets, and they will oppose any legislation to make a total ban, besides as has been revealed FIRCA can only screen 10-15% of Containers inbound, and even if they do get a loan from China's EXIM and purchase the Scanners from the Premiers relatives company and do find 'terminator seeds' we do not have the laboratories and expertise anyway to differentiate nor the legislation to prohibit and prosecute.
Of course there a several stages to fully effect this, the first being to purchase organic seeds from our poor farmers knowing very well that most of them would treat it like a pawn shop when they are desperate, slowly and surely this will be replaced by the new terminator seeds as they “move Fiji forward” just in Franks line those kind of words.
You see racial comments about 'weeds' are meant to be made so that our people can WAKE UP because it would be in everyones 'permanent interest' to unite, to think and act as ONE, otherwise you will truly be eating pork based beef and beef based pork or chicken tofu because these corrupt corporations and the new ones arriving will kill you softy with their love, and in the process render FIJIAN land sterile.
On the 8th of March 2006 the UK House of Commons deliberated on the issue of 'terminator seeds'. On the 23rd of October 2007 the UK House of Lords reaffirmed their position on the issue. Both these question and answers can be found in their respective Hansard here http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/pahansard.htm
In the South Pacific the only Island Nation that we know of that has incorporated into domestic law specific legislation dealing with bio security is Niue, perhaps because of its compact with NZ.
The rest of the Pacific normally follow Fiji's lead in all things suave, quick to ratify on the international scene, slow to incorporate and enforce domestically due to lack of resources and expertise.
This is why being a member of the Commonwealth and Pacific Islands Forum is essential, especially when we are an isolated fragmented vunerable small island state in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is also why we must maintain cordial relations with our closest neighbors NZ and Australia, the EU, Japan and other Donor agencies whose policies which seek to promote good governance is not understood by a military regime, who are focussed solely on enriching themselves at the price of the people.
In November 2006, our previous lawful government published their Strategic Development Plan 2007-2011, which vision for a prosperous and peaceful Fiji incorporated “what really matters” to the People.
It was this same government that implemented various environment programmes throughout Fiji related to biodiversity conservation, sustainable biological resource use, climate change, waste and pollution, development control and other programmes related to Fiji’s obligations under regional and multilateral agreements.
But what has happened is that since the 2006 coup there has been NOTHING CONSTRUCTIVE done by our illegal military government in this area.
The ripple effect to our International and Regional Organizations based in Fiji has also been witnessed. You see, the environment that an organization operates in affects the productivity of its personnel. Lets give you an example of an ineffective inefficient sleeping on the job organization that seems to have shut down since the 2006 coup. It is called SPREP and their donor funding should be scrutinized http://www.sprep.org/publication/pub_list.asp?int_pub_cat1=7
This is a Governance issue that could have a devastating impact on our economy as a result of our entire commercial agricultural sector being sabotaged by such varietal genetic use restriction technologies (VGURT's) and in particular 'terminator seeds' which will walk through Franks front door because the terrorist that have, are and will import it are his own Military's food suppliers.
